Located in The Plaza in Parkwest Industrial Estate, the Parkwest branch of energie fitness is part of a chain of fitness clubs stretching across the UK and Ireland. The venue boasts a 30,000 square foot gym as well as a host of other leisure facilities including a 20m swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. The gym is open early and closes late 7 days per week in order to cater for their busy members and visitors. They also run swimming lessons and a range of classes, which are open to non-members as well as catering for their members.
We approached energie with a view to taking over their vending from their current supplier. Although they did not have any significant issues with their current supplier, we met General Manager, Dane Cullen, to outline our approach to vending and to identify where we could make improvements, and in turn increase revenue through our vending services.
 
We identified some key areas where improvements could be made
  • Payment Options – their current supplier accepted only coins and notes, which meant that potential sales were being missed. All our machines come with cashless payment options as standard as well as cash. This means sales could be now made through debit/credit cards (swipe and contactless) as well as Apple Pay and Android Pay. Over 30% of our transactions overall are through cashless payments and we see this growing each month.
  • Product Range – We looked at the current product range and made suggestions of what items were popular across our other locations. We also took on Dane’s feedback of what he believes would sell and made adjustments. In the first week after the install we monitored sales each day and took products out that were not selling to optimise the machine fully to maximise revenue. We then monitor sales each month and will add in new products that come on to the market.
  • Stock Levels – stocking levels were often low or empty which resulted in missed sales. With the technology we have in our machines, we are constantly on top of stock levels, and our operators even receive SMS text alerts to notify of low stock before it runs out. We do not have rigid stocking routes and will visit machines as often or as little as needed.
  • Commission Payments – we proposed a commission based model as opposed to their current model of a fixed price per sale. We were confident that we could increase revenue by a significant amount, and in only our second month we increased their commission payment by 90% on their average monthly payment prior to us taking over. We also issue a sales report with each payment which is automatically generated by our systems, and can give detail down to sales by day by product if required
  • Branding – We understood that the energie brand was a very strong brand and is carried throughout the gym. To ensure our machine blended in with the surroundings we had the machine wrapped according to their brand guidelines. We also added an image to our 7” touchscreen to complete the overall look and feel
The above resulted in a 92% increase in their previous monthly average commission, and this was achieved in month 2 with us. We expect this to grow even further. Due to the success of our current combi machine, we will shortly adding a state of the art bean to cup coffee machine to the portfolio
